Life Lessons For Everyone in Their 20s
As someone in their early to mid-twenties, I have learned a lot already and I have much more learning to do. I have gained friends that I thought would last a lifetime to find out they were only meant to be in my life for a short while. I graduated college knowing exactly what I wanted to do to realize I am meant to do something completely different.
Leaving school and going into the adult world can be a really scary place, but it can also be a really exciting adventure. Here are some lessons I have learned as I have tried navigating life in my twenties.
1) Be Prepared For Life to Throw You Curveballs
We all know life has a funny way of showing us that it thinks it's still in charge of us. We think everything is going great, but then BAM something happens that puts us in a tailspin that we feel we can't get out of. Yeah, I have had quite a few of those over the years. Do your best to breathe and to adapt to your new circumstances because that's what our twenties are all about.
2) Take Control of Your Own Life
It's time that we become the driver of our lives and not let others tell us what we should, or should not do. If we make a mistake it's okay because then we learn from it and move on. If we have someone else making decisions for us than we won't ever learn how to become responsible adults. If you want to work a 9-5 job then do it. If you want to start your business then do it.
3) It's Okay to be Lost
It's okay to not have your future mapped out right after college. When I graduated from College I thought I had to have everything together and when I had trouble finding a job I felt lost. I saw my friends having an idea of their next steps of going to grad schools, or taking a year off. I knew what I wanted to do, but I was having trouble getting a job. As time went on I learned it's okay to not have it all together right away and that I didn't even have to have a job in the area I graduated in right from the start. As cheesy as it is "Everything happens for a reason."
4) It's About Having Fun
It's a time to be exploring the world and trying new things. Maybe you don't have the means to explore the world and that's okay. You can explore your hometown or your local city. I'm from Michigan. My friends and I go to Detroit and Royal Oak all the time. You can also pick up a new hobby something you have always wanted to do, but never had the courage.
5) Live in the Moment
This is something I am currently working on myself. With all the daily stress, the bumps in the road, and the uncertainty of the future it can be hard to live in the moment. I have learned that sometimes the best things happen in those rare moments when we aren't focused on what could be, or what should be. In most cases, nothing ever happens how we believe it should, or how we expect them to. It's better to go with the flow and enjoy the journey.
